Airmax Classic vs Sport: Which nasal dilator should you choose?

Airmax Classic or Airmax Sport? If you want to make nasal breathing feel easier but are unsure which version or size to choose, the difference is simpler than it looks.

Both are reusable internal nasal dilators that mechanically support the narrow nasal entrance. Sport is not a stronger dilator: its distinguishing feature is two small internal grips designed to help it stay in place during exercise. This guide explains the model, size and pack choices.

Airmax Classic vs Sport: The quick answer

Choose Airmax Classic mainly for sleep and everyday use. Choose Airmax Sport if you expect substantial movement, such as running or workouts, and want its additional retention grips. Both can be used for sleep and exercise.

According to Airmax's product information, the two small retention grips are the key distinction between Classic and Sport—not greater nasal expansion.

What does an Airmax nasal dilator do?

Airmax sits inside the nostrils and gently supports the narrowest part of the nasal passage, which may reduce resistance to airflow for some people. It is a mechanical device, not a medicine or nasal spray.

Research cited by Airmax reports improvements in nasal airflow measures in certain groups. Results depend on nasal anatomy and the cause of restricted airflow; the research is not a guarantee of a particular improvement for every user.

When should you choose Airmax Classic?

Classic is a logical first choice if you mainly want to try nasal dilation while sleeping, resting or going about your day. It provides the same basic expansion mechanism without Sport's extra retention grips.

Choose Classic if your priority is everyday comfort rather than keeping the dilator in place during vigorous movement. You do not need to buy Sport simply because its name sounds more powerful.

When should you choose Airmax Sport?

Sport is designed for people who want the dilator to remain more secure during movement. Its two small internal grips help reduce the chance of it slipping out during activities such as running, road cycling, badminton and gym workouts.

The advantage is retention, not stronger nasal opening. If Classic already fits comfortably, Sport should not be expected to produce a greater airflow improvement simply because it is the sports version.

Can you use Airmax Sport while sleeping?

Yes. Both Classic and Sport can be worn during sleep. Classic is generally the simpler starting point for sleep-only use because the additional exercise grips are usually unnecessary. If Sport already fits comfortably and stays secure, there is no need to switch solely because you wear it at night.

Does Sport expand the nose more than Classic?

No stronger expansion has been established for Sport. The manufacturer describes the additional grips as a way to keep the device in place during exercise, not as a more powerful expansion mechanism.

If Classic feels too tight, too loose or uncomfortable, reconsider the size first. Switching models does not correct an unsuitable size.

Small or Medium: Which Airmax size fits?

Both versions come in Small and Medium. According to the Airmax FAQ, around 80% of users choose Medium, and Medium is approximately 5 mm wider than Small. That is a useful starting point, not a rule that Medium is right for everyone.

If Medium creates uncomfortable pressure or is difficult to position, try Small. If Small does not sit securely or provide a suitable fit, try Medium. The better size feels comfortable and stable without needing to be forced into place.

Do not choose solely from gender, age or the outside appearance of your nose. Also, Small is not a children's size.

What is the Airmax Trial Pack?

Each Classic or Sport Trial Pack contains one Small and one Medium dilator. These are normal reusable products, not lower-grade samples. The pack helps first-time buyers compare the two fits.

Airmax suggests trying Small first to get used to the sensation, then Medium to compare comfort, stability and airflow. Once you know your size, choose the corresponding 1-pack or 2-pack. Both versions and their Trial Packs are available through the Classic and Sport product pages.

Can Airmax help with snoring?

It may help some people whose snoring is associated with restricted nasal airflow, but snoring can also arise from other parts of the upper airway. Airmax is not a cure for all snoring and not a treatment for obstructive sleep apnea.

Persistent loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, choking or gasping during sleep, or excessive daytime sleepiness should be assessed by a qualified healthcare professional rather than managed with a nasal dilator alone.

How do you fit Airmax correctly?

  1. Wash your hands and clean the dilator before use.
  2. Gently place the two sides inside the nostrils, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Keep the curved ends pointing upward, with the connecting bridge sitting snugly against the nasal septum.
  4. Check that the dilator feels secure and comfortable, without painful pressure.
  5. Remove it if it causes irritation or pain; do not push it deeper or force a larger size.

If neither size fits comfortably, do not assume Sport will solve the problem simply because it has extra grips.

How long does Airmax last, and how do you clean it?

Airmax is made from reusable SEBS. Its current manufacturer FAQ recommends replacement after approximately 2 months because elasticity can decline with repeated use. Replace it sooner if it becomes damaged, deformed or uncomfortable.

Rinse before and after use, clean with mild soap and water as directed, let it dry, and store it in its case. Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh disinfectants.

Can children use Airmax?

Airmax's official instructions specify use for people aged 12 and above. It is not suitable for children under 12. Small means a smaller fit, not a children's version.

For a child's ongoing nasal obstruction or snoring, seek age-appropriate medical guidance.

Which Airmax should you choose?

Make the decision in this order: intended use, fit, then pack size.

  • Mainly sleep or everyday use: Start with Airmax Classic.
  • Mainly running, cycling or other active use: Consider Airmax Sport for its extra retention grips.
  • Unsure about Small or Medium: Choose a Trial Pack to compare both sizes.
  • Already know your model and size: Choose the corresponding 1-pack or 2-pack.

Sport is not a stronger nasal dilator, and Medium is not automatically better than Small. The right choice is the one that matches your activities and fits comfortably.

Explore Airmax Classic or Airmax Sport to compare available sizes and packs. If breathing problems or significant snoring persist, seek medical advice instead of relying on a dilator alone.
